This page explains what Best Of Motivation collects when you use bestofmotivation.com, our quizzes, tools, assessments, the Practice Room, Ask BOM and the Writer Helper for guest writers, what we do with it, who else handles it and how long it is kept. We don’t have user accounts and we don’t sell your data.
Who is responsible for your data?
The data controller is Nelson Fernandes, trading as Best Of Motivation (a registered business name in Jersey), licensed in Jersey, Channel Islands, to provide online publishing and self-development products. We’re registered as a data controller with the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner, registration number 104197. For any privacy question or request, email [email protected].
What do we collect?
- Your email address, when you ask for a report, a PDF, a plan or a waitlist place, and your first name if you choose to give it.
- Your quiz and assessment results: your scores and result type. Your individual answers are worked out in the page and are not kept, except where a paid report needs them (see “How long do we keep it?”).
- What you type or say into a tool, such as a job title, a question for Ask BOM or your lines in a Practice Room conversation. This is sent to an AI provider to write the reply and is not stored by us. If you speak in the Practice Room, your recording is sent to be turned into text and then dropped. The Writer Helper for guest writers works differently: see “What about guest writers?” below.
- Purchase details when you buy: your email address, country, what you bought and the order number. Card and PayPal details stay with the payment provider. We never see them.
- Technical data: your IP address and browser details, used to keep free limits fair and to stop abuse, and site usage data from Google Analytics if you accept analytics cookies.
Please don’t type private or confidential information into our quizzes or tools. If you mention anyone in the Practice Room or in a question, use a made-up name.
What about team quizzes?
Our team quizzes (Team Colour and Team AI) have two kinds of people: the person who buys and the team members who take part.
- The buyer gives us their email address at checkout, with the order number, team size and any group names they set up. We email them the team links, and a reminder when the team map is ready.
- Team members don’t give us a name or an email address. Their answers are kept without a name. The buyer sees the team’s combined results, never who answered what; in Team Colour they see each person’s main colour only, never their name.
- The team report is written by an AI model from the combined results and group names. No email address is sent to it.
- Everything about the team, the buyer’s email address included, is deleted 90 days after purchase.
What about guest writers?
Nelson invites some people to write for Best Of Motivation, using a tool called the Writer Helper. If you write for us, or ask to, this is what we keep:
- Your writer details: your name, email address and a short bio, so Nelson can contact you and credit you. You choose how you appear: as a guest writer (your name and bio), as a full author (an author page on the site with your photo, bio and any links you add) or anonymously under a Best Of Motivation writer code name, in which case your real name is never shown. Your writer token is stored only in a scrambled form.
- Your consent: which boxes you ticked on the writer form, and when, so we can show what you agreed to.
- Your ideas, answers and drafts, so you can carry on where you left off and Nelson can read what you send.
- A request to write, if you ask without a token: your name, email address and what you’d like to write about, used only to reply to you.
Your answers and drafts are sent to an AI model to ask you questions, set your article in the site layout and check it. Your email address is never sent to it. The helper blocks anything that could identify or harm a person or a company, such as names, email addresses or phone numbers, so please leave them out. When your article is published, it appears on bestofmotivation.com under the name you chose (your name and bio, or your code name) until you ask us to take it down. You can also ask us to delete your writer details and drafts at any time. We delete your details and drafts 12 months after your last article, or sooner if you ask. What do we use it for, and on what basis?
- To give you what you asked for: your result, report, PDF, credit code or purchase. Basis: providing the service you requested, or our contract with you when you buy.
- To send you occasional emails when you have agreed to them, by ticking the box under an email form. If you leave it empty, you get what you asked for (your result, report or PDF) and nothing else. On the Leadership Diagnostic, that one emailed copy of your lines means we keep your email address and your lines for up to 3 days, then delete them. Basis: your consent. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- To keep free limits fair, prevent abuse and keep the site secure. Basis: our legitimate interest in running free tools without them being misused.
- To measure the site and our adverts with analytics and advertising cookies. Basis: your consent through the cookie banner.
- To keep business and tax records of sales. Basis: legal obligation.
- To run the Writer Helper for guest writers: helping you write, checking your article and publishing it under your name. Basis: our agreement to publish what you send. If you tick the optional box for emails with new ideas to write about, that part is based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. Replying to a request to write: our legitimate interest in answering people who contact us.
Who else handles your data?
We use a small number of service providers. Each one receives only what it needs to do its job and acts on our instructions.
- Mailchimp (email list): your email address, your first name if you gave it, which quiz, tool or download you used, your result type and, for some tools, the short result we sent you. Not what you typed.
- Resend (delivery email): your email address and the report, PDF, plan or credit code being delivered, and the one “How did it go?” email if you ask for it in the Practice Room.
- Payhip and PayPal (checkout and payment): your email address, country and payment details when you buy on our site.
- Etsy (our Etsy shop) and Bookvault (printing and posting our printed book): your name, delivery address and order details when you order through Etsy. Etsy’s own privacy policy also applies there.
- AI model providers (writing reports, answers, coach feedback and Practice Room replies): your scores or result, and anything you typed into a tool, such as a job title, a question or your conversation lines. Your email address is never sent to an AI model, and we don’t allow your data to be used to train their models. Under their own data terms, our AI providers keep what we send for up to 30 days to check for misuse and then delete it, unless misuse is flagged or the law requires them to keep it longer.
- Speech providers (reading answers and reports aloud, the character’s voice in the Practice Room, turning your spoken lines into text, and live calls in Practice Room Pro): the text being read out; your recording, which is dropped once it has been turned into text; or, on a live call, your voice as you speak. We don’t record or keep live calls, and we ask the provider not to store them. Speech providers may keep short safety logs for up to 30 days, and don’t use what you say to train their models.
- Hosting and infrastructure providers: this website and the services behind our quizzes and tools run on their servers, including the short-term storage listed below and short technical logs kept for up to 7 days.
- Google Drive (website backups): copies of the website, kept so it can be restored.
- Google Analytics: this runs in your browser only if you accept the matching cookies. See “Cookies, analytics and adverts” below.
- Gravatar: the author photo on articles loads from Gravatar, which receives your IP address and browser details when the photo loads.
- Google Fonts: our quizzes, tools and the Practice Room load their typefaces from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address and browser details when the page loads.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is not one of the providers above. Only if you accept advertising cookies, the Meta pixel records visits and quiz events in your browser, so we can measure our adverts. Meta also uses this data for its own purposes, under its own privacy policy (facebook.com/privacy/policy). We don’t send Meta anything about you from our server.
We may also share data if the law requires it, or to protect our rights in a legal claim. If the business is ever sold, the data would pass to the new owner under this policy.
Is my data sent outside Jersey?
Yes. Several of these providers process data in the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States and other countries. Where data leaves Jersey, the UK or the EU, we rely on the safeguards in the providers’ own data protection terms, such as standard contractual clauses.

Anonymous counts that can’t identify you, such as how many people finished a quiz, may be kept longer.
Cookies, analytics and adverts
When you first visit, the cookie banner asks what you allow. Analytics and advertising tools don’t load until you accept them, and you can change your choice any time with “Manage cookies” in the footer. Full details are in our Cookie Policy.
- Google Analytics records page views, time on page, clicks, quiz events such as starting or finishing a quiz (not your answers), device, browser, city-level location and how you found us. It never receives your name or email address. We have allowed Google to use this data for ads personalisation, which only applies if you accept advertising cookies.
- The Meta (Facebook) pixel records visits and quiz events, so we can measure our Facebook and Instagram adverts.

What is saved in your own browser?
Some of our tools save things in your browser’s own storage, so you don’t lose your place. This is read only by our pages. It isn’t a tracking cookie and isn’t used for adverts.
- Quiz results, and the email address you entered, so you can return to your result. For most quizzes this lasts until you close the tab; for the AI quiz it is kept on your device for up to 7 days.
- Your Practice Room conversation, until you close the tab, so a reload doesn’t lose it. For Practice Room Pro, also your pass for the second go and last time’s notes.
- Your BOM Credits code, once you’ve used it in any of our tools, so every tool can fill it in and show how many BOM Credits are left. “Forget this code” in the credits circle, or “Not your code?” under a code box, removes it. Also your last few Ask BOM questions, and a random browser number used for free goes.
- For team quizzes, your team member link, so you can see your team’s results.
- For guest writers, your writer token, so you don’t have to type it each time. “Sign out” in the Writer Helper removes it.
Clearing your browser’s site data removes all of it.
What are your rights?
You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, stop using it or send you a copy. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time, for example by unsubscribing or changing your cookie choice. Email [email protected] and we’ll reply within one month.
If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner (jerseyoic.org), or to the data protection authority where you live, such as the ICO in the UK.
Children
Best Of Motivation is written for adults at work. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you think a child has given us their details, email us and we’ll delete them.
Security
We keep what we hold to a minimum, scramble identifiers where we can, sign report links so they expire, and delete data on the schedule above. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable care to protect your information.
Links to other sites
Our pages link to other websites, such as Payhip, Etsy, YouTube and LinkedIn. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them.
Changes to this policy
When we change how we handle data, we update this page and the date at the top. Changes apply from the day they are posted.
